The April meeting of the LA 3-D Club will take place on Thursday, April 17th from 7:00pm – 9:30pm at the Velaslavasay Panorama, 1122 W 24th St, Los Angeles, CA 90007
This month we’ll see several of the short 3-D films that were shown last year in the 3-D Theater at the 2024 3D-Con in Wichita, Kansas:
First we’ll watch Die Buben im Pelz – Die Wüdn by Christian A. Zschammer. This film is a music video with a documentary touch. We see the band “Die Buben im Pelz” (The Boys In Fur) from Vienna, Austria, while getting photographed in 3-D for a limited collector’s ViewMaster reel. On the acoustic side they take a bow to Lou Reed with their personal version of the song “Die Wüdn” (The Wild Ones), sung in the very charming German-Vienese dialect. This video recently won the award for Best Live Action at the 2025 Stereoscopic Displays & Applications 3-D Theater Session.
Next on the program, we’ll see LA 3-D Club member Tom Koester’s Rhine River Tour, a look at a passage through the famous Rhine River Gorge – a UNESCO World Heritage site. A combination of native Kandao Qoocam EGO 3D footage with closer iPhone footage in varying degrees of hyper stereo through “pulfrichization.”
The third film of the night will be TWENTYTNEWT (2020) by Max Hattler. Shot entirely from the artist’s apartment on the 36th floor of a high-rise building, the images in this experimental stereoscopic animation survey large parts of Hong Kong’s cityscape. Using an extreme distance of up to two meters between two synchronized cameras capturing the stereoscopic scenes, the recipient’s interocular distance is widened, making the viewer a giant and the city a miniature of cardboard cut-outs and dollhouses. The expanded stereoscopic approach employed in TWENTYTNEWT (2020) creates a strong sense of defamiliarization, through which the city is reconfigured for the viewer to draw attention to the collectively sequestered lives hidden inside its buildings. Initially recorded in 2020 and completed in 2023 with the advantage of critical distance, the film attempts to encapsulate the darkness, confinement, and uncertainty of 2020 – the year of the global pandemic and the introduction of Hong Kong’s national security law.
The final film of the night will be The Miniatur Wunderland by John Hart. The Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, Germany, is the world’s largest model railroad, featuring hundreds of engines, thousands of cars, and hundreds of thousands of figures and lights. This presentation explores several of the model’s countries, along with backstage views, from multiple perspectives. Winner of the 2024 Paul Wing Award for Best in Show.
In addition, we will also see the videos promoting the upcoming 2025 3D-Con in Minneapolis and the 2025 ISU World Congress in The Netherlands.
The meeting will conclude with a club member “Show-and-Tell.” We would love to see your favorite 3-D images and collectibles. Members are encouraged to share an item of interest with the rest of the attendees. Share you favorite photos, videos, and 3-D items.
