You know the Armory Center for the Arts as the free venue for LA 3D Club meetings for over the last few years.

But do you REALLY know the Armory?
The Armory that builds on the power of art to transform lives and communities?
The Armory that facilitates the creating, teaching and presenting of the arts?

As a not-for-profit organization, the Armory has provided a wide range of free programming for students of all ages since 1983. Classes are taught by professionally trained teaching artists committed to creating safe, supportive environments in which students can have fun learning experiences about art, while developing their artistic skills and exploring stimulating ideas. The Armory actively collaborates with agencies and community groups – like Homeboy Industries and Learning Works Charter School – to offer free art classes for over 5,000 at-risk and economically challenged youth throughout Northwest Pasadena.

Each year, the Armory has an Annual Benefit to raise funds for our general operating expenses. As you can imagine, most of the Armory’s funding comes from this once-a-year appeal. We invite you to be an Armory Patron with a contribution of ANY amount. Your donation needs to arrive prior to February 7th to be acknowledged in the invitation.

You can donate HERE or by calling Suzette Stambler at 626.792.5101 x 118

The producers of the 2012 SD&A 3D Theater were Andrew Woods (Curtin University, Australia) and Chris Ward (Lightspeed Design, USA). The SD&A 3D Theater session was projected in high-quality polarized 3D using equipment and services from DepthQ Stereoscopic, Christie Digital, Visitech 3D, and Strong MDI Screen Systems. Additional support was provided by Dan Lawrence (Lightspeed Design) and John Stern (Intuitive Surgical Inc., retired).

The SD&A 3D Theater is the highest-attended session of the SD&A conference. Many audience members commented afterwards about the high quality and diversity of the program, and expressed their appreciation at being able to see such a wide range of 3D content.

ABOUT THE SD&A 3D THEATER

The purpose of the annual SD&A 3D Theater is to showcase the wide range of 3D content produced all around the world. 3D content segments shown in the 3D Theater session are usually limited to three minutes in length in order to allow a wide range of content to be screened in a limited time period. The 3D Theater provides a useful focus on the more artistic and creative side of stereoscopic imaging in juxtaposition to the technical focus of some of the other sessions of the SD&A conference. The SD&A 3D Theater session was held on the evening of Monday 23 January 2012 at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport Hotel.

An illustrated listing of content shown during previous 3D Theater sessions is provided here:

A “3D mash-up” of content from previous years’ 3D Theater sessions can be found on YouTube3D courtesy of DepthQ: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_d8aozFXLk

ABOUT THE SD&A CONFERENCE

The 23rd annual Stereoscopic Displays and Applications (SD&A) conference was held 23-25 January 2012 at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport Hotel in Burlingame California. SD&A is the largest and longest running technical conference dedicated to stereoscopic imaging, and is the world’s premier conference for 3D innovation. At this year’s conference almost 100 technical manuscripts were presented, covering a wide range of stereoscopic imaging topics. The SD&A conference is held as part of the annual Electronic Imaging Symposium organized by IS&T and SPIE. The full program of the 2012 SD&A conference is available here: http://www.stereoscopic.org/2012/program.html

Digital Darkroom is comprised of an 80-image print show with 2-6 images contributed by each of the featured photographers. Hundreds of additional images from Digital Darkroom’s photographers will also be showcased in vivid detail on the two 14′ by 7′ high-resolution screens in the Photography Space’s Digital Gallery.

The exhibition includes a 3D film shot in 5K resolution using RED EPIC cameras, presented in a specially created screening room. This film includes interviews with 3D experts and historians Ray Zone and David Kuntz, 3D artists Ted Grudowski and Christopher Schneberger, and explores how 3D artists Claudia Kunin and Mike Pucher photograph their subjects and alter them digitally to create 3D results. Key elements of the history of stereoscopic photography are also in the film.

Recently released on BluRay, “A Haunting in Salem” is a horror film based around the historic events of the Salem witch trials of 1692. Global Asylum felt the storyline lent itself to being enhanced by stereoscopic 3D, and chose to capture the movie in native 3D, rather than converting it after the fact. Shot on Red Ones and using the DV4 beam-splitter provided by InterVideo, the feature’s principal photography, helmed by DP Alexander Yellen, maintained a tight schedule, covering up to 28 set ups per day. As On-Set Stereographer, Ms. Benna was in charge of stereoscopic equipment, camera and rig alignment, depth budget, and depth score. She also served as the film’s overall stereoscopic production consultant.

An experienced filmmaker, Ms. Benna said, “I was amazed by the efficiency and cohesive teamwork behind ‘A Haunting in Salem’. This production team managed to shoot a full length, 3D feature in only 12 days. I was skeptical about making the schedule, especially with a full sized rig, but once we got the feel of our system down, we had almost no problems. Everyone was very receptive to making adjustments to enhance the stereo effect. It was great fun to work in such a collaborative environment!”

According to the film’s director, Shane Van Dyke, “Working with Shannon was an absolute pleasure and an invaluable learning experience. Having never worked with 3D myself, I was able to gain a whole new understanding of the process and the fundamentals that go along with it.”

In addition to her consulting work on behalf of various 3D productions, Ms. Benna is also launching a “Women in 3D” industry organization to help synergize the community. She said, “I truly love working in 3D, and I want to make the 3D Women’s community a very global one. So far, I have ‘rounded up’ more than 60 ‘Stereo Sisters’ currently working in the 3D space. I believe in the magic of 3D—it changes one’s perspective, and I feel proof of that by working within the 3D community every day. A woman turned me on to 3D and I’d like to share and nurture that tradition of fellowship and support through mentorship. I want to encourage women everywhere to explore technology and perception through the 3D medium.”

3-D just became eco-friendly! Earth friendly products and concepts are important. The modern era of 3-D arrived in November 2005 with the release of “Chicken Little” and the number of theaters that have gone 3-D has mushroomed along with the number of movies being released in 3-D. There’s been a sharp increase in the number of petroleum based plastic 3-D glasses that have been created and disposed of (or piled up at my house.) There have been about 250 million on an annual basis and that number will continue to grow.

Theaters have a recycling program, but their eyewear is still made from a petroleum-based product that is not renewable and sustainable and will sit in a landfill for 500 years before they degrade. But hope is here, there is new 3-D eyewear made from Cereplast, a renewable and sustainable material that contains no fossil fuels, the product is natural. The eco-friendly 3-D glasses can be used once or many times. When they are no longer usable, they can be recycled, as they bear the number 7 in the recycle symbol, like the petroleum based 3-D glasses currently in use.

While not optimal, if the eco-friendly 3-D glasses end up in a landfill, they will degrade far more rapidly than traditional plastic glasses. Plant based materials such as used in Cereplast are renewable. We can plant new crops this year and more next year, if necessary. The impact on our environment is considerable. Consider a pair of the plastic glasses that seem ubiquitous in the industry. Ten million pairs of the glasses made from Cereplast is equivalent to eliminating green house emissions from burning 74,039 gallons of gasoline or 1,536 barrels of oil. They are available from Berezin.com. For more information check out Oculus 3D’s website.
