March Virtual Meeting – 3/17/22

While we hope to be able to meet in person again very soon, we are currently holding virtual meetings.

The March virtual meeting of the LA 3-D Club will take place on Thursday, March 17th from 7:00pm – 8:30pm on Zoom at la3d.club.

The evening will feature the fourth competition of the 2021-2022 LA 3-D Club year. The special theme for this month is CELEBRATION. Club members may enter their images into the competition by using the UPLOADER which will be available online until 11:59pm on Friday, March 11th. We will show competition submissions during the meeting and announce results of the competition judging which will take place earlier.

The competition will be judged by people individually at their own homes, rather than in a group setting.  The judges will be able to view the images on a large screen 3D TV, but we can’t completely control the conditions under which judging will occur.  However, entrants can safely assume that judges will be viewing images on a large (>42 inch) 16:9 aspect ratio screen, with a minimum resolution of 1920×1080. So, prepare your images accordingly, and submit them through the uploader as usual.  And, the theme awards will be chosen as usual, too.

In addition, we will be joined by animator Steve Segal, who will present his newest stereoscopic animated film, Misfit.

In the 1970′s Steve Segal ran a studio that made commercials and educational films in Richmond, Va. He also created several independent short films which have won awards at film festivals and been included in theatrical packages. He has been teaching animation for over 40 years.  In 1986 he used an early computer program to plan scenes for the animated feature The Brave Little Toaster.  He worked as an animator on PeeWee’s Playhouse and made an animated musical film for Sesame Street.  At Pixar he animated on the feature films Toy Story and A Bug’s Life, the 3-D theme park attraction It’s Tough to be a Bug, the Oscar winning short film Geri’s Game and directed a commercial for Hershey’s Chocolate. In 2014 he was awarded Best in Show for his performance piece Outside the Box at the ASIFA SF animation festival. His first personal 3-D film Demented Dancing Doohickies has been shown at 3D-Con 2017 and the 2017 LA 3D Film Festival. His most recent film Misfit has been included in over 30 film festivals (none of them 3D).

Misfit is about a piece of a jigsaw puzzle who gets separated from his group and attempts to join other puzzles to find where he fits in. It was animated in Maya, backgrounds and textures were created in Photoshop and edited in Premiere Pro. The stereo was accomplished using a virtual twin lens rig, which is included in Maya.

The meeting will conclude with a club member “Show-and-Tell.” , We would love to see your favorite 3-D images and collectibles. Members are encouraged to share an item of interest with the rest of the attendees.

Please join our meeting from your computer, tablet or smartphone.

Members can sign in early at 6:30pm to socialize. All are welcome to attend.
