Introducing the Phanto-Popup: A New Extension to the Phantogram

Perry Hoberman is a media artist, educator and musician. He has been exhibiting and performing locally, nationally, and internationally for more than four decades. Using a wide variety of high and low technology, Hoberman has done pioneering work in virtual reality, interactive media, and stereoscopic 3D imaging.

“For this talk, I will describe an extension of the phantogram that removes some of the limitations of this fascinating and effective 3D imaging format. A phantogram is a stereoscopic image that is displayed horizontally, usually an anaglyph, viewed from above at about a 45 degree angle.  The image is distorted anamorphically, such that when viewed from the correct position, the anamorphic distortion is canceled out by the foreshortening resulting from the viewing position. I’ll discuss the aesthetics and perceptual features of phantograms, analyzing why they can seem more ‘real’ (present) than other kinds of stereoscopic images, and I’ll make the case that phantograms could be considered a form of mixed reality, combining physical and virtual elements. However, phantograms come with several severe limitations: only subjects that are shorter than the camera height can be depicted, and subjects are typically limited to a single discrete object photographed without a background. My innovation is to ‘bend’ the image support so that half the image is processed as a phantogram, displayed horizontally, while the other half is presented conventionally on a vertical surface. By adding a vertical plane to a phantogram, the requirement that the subject be below the viewer’s line of sight is removed and a background is added, allowing for a far wider choice of subjects. I’ll describe how I came up with this new format, some current and future projects that use it, and the step-by-step process for creating them.”

Perry Hoberman has been the recipient of many awards and honors, including fellowships from the Rockefeller and Guggenheim Foundations, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York Foundation for the Arts, as well as prizes from Prix Ars Electronica (Linz) and the ICC Biennial (Tokyo). Hoberman has taught and lectured widely, with appointments at the San Francisco Art Institute, the Cooper Union, the School of Visual Arts, and the USC School of Cinematic Arts. He now lives in Twentynine Palms with his wife, the artist Julia Heyward, and two cats. His band Desert Drama Club performs regularly in and around Joshua Tree.

The meeting will conclude with a club member “Show-and-Tell.” We would love to see your favorite 3-D images and collectibles. Members are encouraged to share an item of interest with the rest of the attendees. Share you favorite photos, videos, and 3-D items.
