May Virtual Meeting – 5/20/21

Due to the worldwide public health emergency, upcoming physical meetings of the LA 3-D Club have been suspended. However, we are holding virtual meetings and we’re still holding our scheduled competitions.

The May virtual meeting of the LA 3-D Club will take place on Thursday, May 20 from 7:00pm – 8:30pm on Zoom at la3d.club.

The evening will feature the fifth competition of the 2020-2021 LA 3-D Club year. The special theme for this month is NIGHTLIFE. Club members may enter their images into the competition by using the UPLOADER which will be available online until 11:59pm on May 14. We will show competition submissions during the meeting and announce results of the competition judging which will take place earlier.

The competition will be judged by people individually at their own homes, rather than in a group setting.  The judges will be able to view the images on a large screen 3D TV, but we can’t completely control the conditions under which judging will occur.  However, entrants can safely assume that judges will be viewing images on a large (>42 inch) 16:9 aspect ratio screen, with a minimum resolution of 1920×1080. So, prepare your images accordingly, and submit them through the uploader as usual.  And, the theme awards will be chosen as usual, too.

Ray Zone (1947-2012) was born on May 16th, and in remembrance of his birthday, we dedicate this month’s meeting to his memory. The meeting will include a Ray Zone “Show-and-Tell.” We would love to see your favorite “3-D Zone” comic book, 3-D image of Ray, or favorite story. Member’s are encouraged to share an item of interest with the rest of the attendees.

Our special guest speaker this month is 3-D artist Charles Barnard. Charles is a digital artist and game industry veteran from Stockton, California.  From 2013 – 2020, he took over 3-D conversion duties for the late Ray Zone on Aaron Warner’s, “Gone MaDDD”, an ongoing comic featured in Stereo World magazine.  In 2017, Charles was nominated for an Eisner Award for his 3-D conversion work on Jim Woodring’s “Frank in the 3rd Dimension, and in 2019, he, along with conversionist Christian LeBlanc, converted 17 pages of Alan Moore’s limited comic series, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Tempest to full color anaglyph.  Over the last few years, Charles has had the pleasure of being commissioned to convert artwork and photographs for independent artists, as well as corporations ranging from Google to the 3-D Film Archive. Charles is an avid 3-D hobbyist, and has been a member of the National Stereoscopic Association since 1988.  He enjoys creating 3-D images in a variety of styles and formats, ranging from Viewmaster reels, stereocards, anaglyphs, lenticular prints and VR.
