September Meeting 9/21 – Jim Long’s Stereo Conversions

The LA 3-D Club is meeting IN-PERSON in September!

The September meeting of the LA 3-D Club will take place on Thursday, September 21 from 7:00pm – 9:30pm at the Velaslavasay Panorama, 1122 W 24th St, Los Angeles, CA 90007

How can I make 3D conversions from regular images?

New club President Jim Long will present the basic conversion techniques he has used for 20 years.

“They were learned from the 2002 NSA convention with Dan Shelley. I will step through the basics that I use in every conversion I do. The example image we will use is Morro Rock in Morro Bay. After that I will show a gallery presentation of some of the last 20 years of conversion work. This will be followed by a question and answer period, so bring your thoughts and questions. I look forward to a stimulating presentation.”

Also on the program, club member Chris Casady will present A treat for Thursday. “I’ve recently been scanning my old 16mm films that date all the way back to the early 70s. Among the buried treasures was a 3D film I had completely forgotten about. I briefly acquired a Tri-Delta prism attachment for still and movie cameras. I stuck it on a Bolex and shot a few rolls of film with some friends horsing around. It’s an amateur home movie where we intentionally tried to exploit the 3D potential! I hope you enjoy it!”

In addition we will take a look at one of the shows from this year’s National Stereoscopic Association 3D-Con Theater.

We also encourage everyone to bring their favorite 3-D items and images to share in the members’ “Show-and-tell”.

<h2>Moe’s 3-D Photography</h2>
Presented for the first time by 3-D SPACE, the museum of 3-D in Los Angeles! The almost-lost 3-D slides, taken by Moe Howard, the Three Stooges’ ringleader. In 1951, Moe took his Stereo Realist camera on the road and shot several rolls of slide film. After he mounted them, he locked them away with his other Three Stooges and family souvenirs. After he passed away in 1975, his daughter, Joan Howard Maurer, stored them in her attic, until the Moe Howard Personal collection was put up for auction in 2019.
We also encourage everyone to bring their favorite 3-D movie memorabilia to share in the members’ “Show-and-tell”.
We will also watch a collection of 3-D movie trailers for exciting upcoming feature motion pictures and recent releases.
Plus we’ll have a few extra surprises!
