September 2025 Meeting – 9/25 – 1st Competition & Medium Format 3-D

The first meeting of the 2025-2026 season will start with the swearing in ceremony for this year’s officers and members. The evening will include the 1st competition of the LA 3-D Club year. The special theme for this month is INFINITE PLANES. We have a newly designed file UPLOADER – please visit the uploader page for further instructions on how to enter this month’s competition.

The evening will also feature a presentation from Zach Horton, professor of English and Media Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. His research focuses on the intersection of technological mediation and scale, especially in the contexts of ecology, play, computational media, and stereoscopy. His book, The Cosmic Zoom: Scale, Knowledge, and Mediation is about attempts to visualize all scales of the universe as contiguously connected. He is a filmmaker, photographer, camera designer, and game designer. He designed the first (and only) fully modular universal camera system in 2015: the Mercury Universal system. In 2023 his company Mercury Works expanded this camera system to encompass medium format stereoscopy; the result was the Mercury Stereo System.

He’ll discuss medium format stereo photography, introduce the Mercury Stereo system, and demonstrate the Mercury Works innovation that allows medium format photographers to shoot on 65mm IMAX film. He’ll also discuss and demonstrate the system he invented at his photography lab, M-Alchemy, to produce analog positives from medium format negatives using a scaled-down version of the IMAX process. He’ll share some of his photographic results from these inventions in the form of medium format stereo slides.

The meeting will conclude with a club member “Show-and-Tell.” We would love to see your favorite 3-D images and collectibles. Members are encouraged to share an item of interest with the rest of the attendees. Share you favorite photos, videos, and 3-D items.
