You know the Armory Center for the Arts as the free venue for LA 3D Club meetings for over the last few years.

But do you REALLY know the Armory?
The Armory that builds on the power of art to transform lives and communities?
The Armory that facilitates the creating, teaching and presenting of the arts?

As a not-for-profit organization, the Armory has provided a wide range of free programming for students of all ages since 1983. Classes are taught by professionally trained teaching artists committed to creating safe, supportive environments in which students can have fun learning experiences about art, while developing their artistic skills and exploring stimulating ideas. The Armory actively collaborates with agencies and community groups – like Homeboy Industries and Learning Works Charter School – to offer free art classes for over 5,000 at-risk and economically challenged youth throughout Northwest Pasadena.

Each year, the Armory has an Annual Benefit to raise funds for our general operating expenses. As you can imagine, most of the Armory’s funding comes from this once-a-year appeal. We invite you to be an Armory Patron with a contribution of ANY amount. Your donation needs to arrive prior to February 7th to be acknowledged in the invitation.

You can donate HERE or by calling Suzette Stambler at 626.792.5101 x 118

The producers of the 2012 SD&A 3D Theater were Andrew Woods (Curtin University, Australia) and Chris Ward (Lightspeed Design, USA). The SD&A 3D Theater session was projected in high-quality polarized 3D using equipment and services from DepthQ Stereoscopic, Christie Digital, Visitech 3D, and Strong MDI Screen Systems. Additional support was provided by Dan Lawrence (Lightspeed Design) and John Stern (Intuitive Surgical Inc., retired).

The SD&A 3D Theater is the highest-attended session of the SD&A conference. Many audience members commented afterwards about the high quality and diversity of the program, and expressed their appreciation at being able to see such a wide range of 3D content.

ABOUT THE SD&A 3D THEATER

The purpose of the annual SD&A 3D Theater is to showcase the wide range of 3D content produced all around the world. 3D content segments shown in the 3D Theater session are usually limited to three minutes in length in order to allow a wide range of content to be screened in a limited time period. The 3D Theater provides a useful focus on the more artistic and creative side of stereoscopic imaging in juxtaposition to the technical focus of some of the other sessions of the SD&A conference. The SD&A 3D Theater session was held on the evening of Monday 23 January 2012 at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport Hotel.

An illustrated listing of content shown during previous 3D Theater sessions is provided here:

A “3D mash-up” of content from previous years’ 3D Theater sessions can be found on YouTube3D courtesy of DepthQ: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_d8aozFXLk

ABOUT THE SD&A CONFERENCE

The 23rd annual Stereoscopic Displays and Applications (SD&A) conference was held 23-25 January 2012 at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport Hotel in Burlingame California. SD&A is the largest and longest running technical conference dedicated to stereoscopic imaging, and is the world’s premier conference for 3D innovation. At this year’s conference almost 100 technical manuscripts were presented, covering a wide range of stereoscopic imaging topics. The SD&A conference is held as part of the annual Electronic Imaging Symposium organized by IS&T and SPIE. The full program of the 2012 SD&A conference is available here: http://www.stereoscopic.org/2012/program.html

“HUGO” is the film we 3-D enthusiasts have been waiting decades for!!! DON’T MISS THIS FILM!! It’s got everything, and virtually every detail is done to perfection. Technically it’s perfect, dimensionally it’s subtle and thrilling every moment. Even the gorgeous distant shots (of Paris, no less) are hyperstereo, but perfectly comfortable to view. The historical aspects of the story are close to totally true (a few details have been changed to make the story work, but could have been true). Historically it’s fascinating for individuals of ALL ages!

The birth of cinema and Georges Melies – one of the great legends of filmmaking is recognized for his tremendous accomplishments in very, very early special effects, color tinting, and exciting storytelling. Told through the eyes and perspectives of two children, this film doesn’t miss a single market interest. Every parent and child, senior and teenager will find this adventurous, delicious, gratifying, electrifying and moving. Both my husband, David Starkman, and I were in tears by the end with the exceptional writing of each character, and yet we were offered such a feast of visual and dimensional creations.

Martin Scorsese we salute you, we thank you, we commend you for doing what film, 3-D, history, and parents are looking for in today’s filmgoing choices. We’ve seen it once and will see it again.

Now, if only the theaters didn’t gouge you every time for the EXTRA cost of 3-D glasses. We still have ours from previous films. Why do we have to pay an extra $3.50 charge to see another 3-D film if we bring our own (already paid for) 3-D specs? Lets see another hit for 3-D, but not penalize the viewer each time for that wonderful, natural third dimension.

The celebration culminates in an all-night vigil at the cemetery with food, drink, candles and stories to honor and keep alive the memory of the departed souls.

“The Lost Temples of Angkor” (26 min)
A thousand years ago the great Khmer civilization arose in the jungles of Cambodia and came to dominate all of Southeast Asia. The magnificent architecture and exquisite sculpture of its temples illustrate the myths, religions and history of this remarkable culture. The ruins are now a World Heritage Site, and include Angkor Wat, the largest religious structure in the world.

The San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 1906 was the worst natural disaster in American history and the first to spark a worldwide media frenzy. This show features rare images never before seen in 3-D, as well as dramatic stereo photos of the 1989 Loma Prieta quake.
