The June meeting of the LA 3-D Club will be presented in partnership with the Velaslavasay Panorama, 1122 W 24th St, Los Angeles, CA 90007 on June 19th, and will be a little different from our regular monthly meetings. The event will be split into two parts:
PART I
The first part of the evening, presented by the Panorama at 7pm, is the ticketed event Immersive Research Sessions: No. 2, a quarterly social gathering to discuss immersive technological innovations and their philosophical implications.
On the occasion of the 238th Anniversary of Robert Barker’s Panorama Patent, Dated June 19th, 1787, the IRS reconvenes and welcomes Daniel Jaquet (Terapixel Panorama / École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), Eric Kurland (LA 3-D Space / LA 3-D Club), and Tonia Ramogida (Terapixel Panorama / École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne).

DANIEL JAQUET is a medieval historian (PhD 2013, University of Geneva), specializing in the study of European martial arts in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. He is also a museologist, collaborating on and curating local, national, and international exhibitions. As the historian in the Terapixel Panorama project at the Laboratory for Experimental Museology at EPFL (2022-2026), he will discuss how to incorporate the historical dimension of a 19th-century object with a contested history into the strategy for presenting it to the public in the 21st century. ERIC KURLAND is an award-winning filmmaker, 3-D specialist, and CEO of 3-D SPACE, The Center For Stereoscopic Photography, Art, Cinema, and Education. Consulting on 3-D projects, his clients have included National Geographic, NASA JPL, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. 3-D director of the Grammy nominated OK Go music video All Is Not Lost. Lead stereographer on the Oscar nominated short Maggie Simpson in The Longest Daycare, and the Emmy nominated Planet Of The Couches VR for The Simpsons. In 2014, he founded 3-D SPACE, a Los Angeles nonprofit museum dedicated to the art, science, and history of stereoscopic images. 3-D Space Website: www.3-DSPACE.org 3-D SPACE on Instagram: @la3Dspace Eric will discuss how the methods of viewing stereoscopic images have evolved from analog to digital.
TONIA RAMOGIDA is a Researcher in Digital Humanities at the EPFL Laboratory for Experimental Museology (eM+) in Lausanne, Switzerland; she works on multisensory storytelling in the form of olfactory, sonic, and narrative augmentation for the Terapixel Panorama project. Her work has produced academic papers, immersive exhibitions, and the Terapixel Panorama’s dynamic smellscape, which constitutes the first-ever use of real-time olfactory augmentation in the cultural heritage domain. In addition to academic writing, Tonia works on immersive literature and creative work forms, including word/image poetry. This has led to several published works. Tonia Ramogida on LinkedIn. Tonia will discuss her scent work and immersive writing techniques for the Terapixel Panorama and other eM+ lab projects.
PART II
The second part of the evening will be the regular monthly meeting of the LA 3-D Club, from approximately 8:15-9:30pm. This portion of the event is FREE and open to the public, Immersive Research Sessions: No. 2 attendees are encouraged to stay for the meeting. Beyond the Screen Plane: Stereo at Walt Disney Animation Studios

Moana 2 Stereoscopic Supervisor Katie Fico shares how Walt Disney Animation Studios uses 3-D technology as a storytelling tool to create unique and compelling immersive experiences. She discusses insights on the creative and technical processes behind some of Disney Animation’s films, as well as the technological innovations of the craft that she has been a part of during her 25 year tenure.
Katie Fico was raised in the Northridge neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, and received a bachelor’s degree in art from her hometown’s own California State University, Northridge. Her career at Walt Disney Animation Studios started in 1997 as a compositor on Disney Animation’s feature film Dinosaur, marking the beginning of her more than 25 years at the studio. Fico is a 3-time Advanced Imaging Society Lumiere Award winner for best Animated Stereography for her work on Zootopia, Frozen, and the animated short, Feast. She is currently working on Zootopia 2.
