The evening will include the third Members’ Photo Competition of the 2011-12 year, and a mini-workshop on adjusting the stereo window in digital photos.

The Competition Uploader is now open, and will close at midnight on 1/18.

Mark your calendars now for the annual LA 3D Club Holiday Party, to be held December 15, 2011 (the third Thursday), starting with dinner at Pitfire Pizza in downtown LA, followed by a special 3-D screening just a few steps from the restaurant at the Downtown Independent Theater. $20 gets you a ticket for both dinner and the show!

Pitfire pizza will be providing a buffet style meal including pizza, pasta, salad and soft drink. In addition, they will be offering a “Brewery Night” special of artisan beers at $2/pour.

The main feature of the evening will be the 3D program on the big screen. We will be presenting four remarkable works by renowned stereo photographer Robert Bloomberg of San Francisco, who will also be in attendance.

“Wish You Were Here: Postcards from Somewhere Else” (8 min)

Greetings from some of the world’s most famous and not-so-famous sites.

“El Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead)”  (14 min)

Once a year, at the beginning of November, Mexico celebrates one of its most joyous holidays, when those who have died return to earth for a brief time to rejoin the living.  Altars are built in homes, churches, and public squares, to welcome the dead with offerings of food and favorite mementos. The celebration culminates in an all-night vigil at the cemetery with food, drink, candles and stories to honor and keep alive the memory of the departed souls.

“The Lost Temples of Angkor” (26 min)
A thousand years ago the great Khmer civilization arose in the jungles of Cambodia and came to dominate all of Southeast Asia. The magnificent architecture and exquisite sculpture of its temples illustrate the myths, religions and history of this remarkable culture. The ruins are now a World Heritage Site, and include Angkor Wat, the largest religious structure in the world.

“The City Quakes: The San Francisco Earthquakes of 1906 and 1989”  (26 min)
The San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 1906 was the worst natural disaster in American history and the first to spark a worldwide media frenzy. This show features rare images never before seen in 3-D, as well as dramatic stereo photos of the 1989 Loma Prieta quake.

Robert Bloomberg is a filmmaker, musician, and avid stereo photographer whose award-winning 3-D shows have been presented worldwide. He was recently honored with a lifetime fellowship from the National Stereoscopic Association and is the Stereo Technical Advisor for the Photographic Society of America.

Bob Bloomberg has been recognized twice by the National Stereoscopic Association with the prestigious Paul Wing Award. He is regional director of the NSA for Northern California and served as theater director for the legendary 2000 NSA convention in Riverside, CA. (the first ever 3-D Dive-In!)

The second Club Competition of the member year!

The November LA 3D Club meeting is the second Competition to which you can submit new images for our Club Competition year (optional theme: Weird), plus a mini-workshop on using the clone tool in StereoPhoto Maker, hosted by Steve Berezin..  Watch for the competition uploader, which will be active here on the website for one week prior to the meeting.

Annual Club Auction!

The October, 2011, meeting of the LA 3D Club is our annual equipment auction.  To paraphrase Forrest Gump, “The auction is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get.”  So, bring your checkbook and be ready to bid on whatever 3D necessities, oddities, rarities and ephemera show up this year.  And, search your drawers, closets and cabinets (and possibly chifforobes, breakfronts and armoires) for items to sell.

First Club Competition of the member year!

The September LA 3D Club meeting is the first Competition to which you can submit new images, film or digital, for our Club Competition year. For the September Competition, any of the three images you enter may be submitted for the Theme award, a separate award ribbon that will be granted to the best image illustrating the theme of “Puzzle”. Your “Puzzle Theme” score(s) will also count normally toward your point totals

September Meeting Program notes from Program Director David Kuntz:

One of the things that impressed me about the recent National Stereoscopic Association convention in Loveland, CO, was the diverse range of activities that were available to attendees. Amongst these were stereo theater shows, workshops, outings, and special interest group meetings. I came away from the convention excited and energized, and I’d like to try to inject some of that into our own monthly Club meetings specifically by including a wider range of activities in our programs. For example, in addition to the first competition of the 2011-12 Club year, the September meeting will include a mini-workshop on producing titles using StereoPhoto Maker, hosted by David Richardson. I plan on scheduling other program events that will give our members the opportunity to learn more about 3D techniques, as well as share their own work and expertise with others, throughout the year.

Come join us for an evening of fun, fellowship and fine French food at our annual SCSC Awards Banquet on Thursday August 18. The banquet will be held at TAIX Restaurant, 1911 W. Sunset Blvd in Los Angeles (Silver Lake / Echo Park area). In addition to our 4 course menu, including your entree choice of Coc au Vin, Beef Bourguignon, or Pasta Monegasque, activities for the evening will include the announcing of the 2011-12  SCSC Board, the annual Awards program and several great 3-D shows. And, not to be missed, the Image of the Year award will be presented following a slide show of all of this year’s IOY entries.

Arrivals start at 7:00 pm and dinner will be served at 8. (We recommend being there by 7:30 pm so you can mingle with SCSC members before dinner).  If you LOVE 3D, be sure to join us for the 2010 Awards Banquet. It’s the most fun you can have with 2 eyes and a tongue!

Banquet tickets are $30 through July 4, $35 through August 17, and $40 on August 18, and at the door. So get your tickets early and save money! This panel will provide audience members with an inside look behind how these filmmakers are approaching the use of 3-D in their productions. Come listen to their perspectives on 3-D and how this technology is shifting the way we watch and tell stories. If you are interested in getting your feet wet with 3-D and want to keep your indie aesthetic this panel is for you.

Immediately following the panel, the LA 3-D Club will hold a “3-DIY Open Screen”. We invite you to bring your own stereoscopic video on hard drive, flash drive or optical drive, to add to the potluck of 3-D content. In addition to DCI compliant digital cinema packages (DCPs), we are able to play many file based formats – avi, wmv, xvid, mov, h264, Proshow exe, etc., and most 3-D formats – parallel, cross-view, over/under, L/R dual streams, etc. at resolutions up to 1080p HD (with some bandwith limitations). Caveat – while we will do our best to play all content we receive, we make no guarantees, as there are so many file variables to deal with. Content is shown on a “first come, first served” basis, time permitting.

The Levi’s® Film Workshop is a temporary venue in Los Angeles for collaboration and creative production that celebrates the craft of filmmaking. It is housed inside the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. Everyone is invited to access the Workshop’s equipment rentals, edit suites and other resources free of charge. The July meeting will be an open projector night, where Club members have the opportunity to see their images projected outside of the context of a competition.  If you have images, videos or short shows you’d like to share or see on the big screen, bring them with you in July.  If time permits, we will also present the newest ISU member club show as well as more fantastic cave photography from Peter and Ann Bosted.
